At LUMIRA, our desire has always been to create a considered and inspiring environment for our customers, staff and suppliers. In 2022, we launched the LUMIRA Light The Way Forward initiative, our commitment to becoming an industry leader in the way we conduct our business. Our overarching goal is to create sustainable growth through respect for people and the environment, both now and into the future.

Light The Way Forward is informed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals for resource management, responsible production and ethical labour. We draw on these goals to guide and shape our business operations in accordance with our values. The following goals particularly resonate with us:

Goal #3 Good Health & Well-Being

We aspire to create a safe, supportive living space and to improve personal wellbeing through a considered use of scent and the use of non-toxic, cruelty-free and vegan-friendly ingredients. This includes the natural soy wax used in all our candles, which has a cleaner burn and less smoke compared with many other wax types.

Goal #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth

We take our ethical responsibility to human rights very seriously across all areas of our supply chain. As part of our Light The Way Forward initiative, we’re proud to have been accredited with Sedex, one of the world’s leading platforms to improve working conditions in global supply chains.

We’re committed to the following principles, and partner with suppliers and businesses who make a similar commitment.

• No child labour and no forced labour of any kind, including slavery or human trafficking;
• All employee working hours must be within the legal limits for the relevant state or country;
• Employees will face no discrimination during or after hiring;
• All employees must receive at least a minimum wage, plus any overtime or penalty rates that apply in that state or country;
• All staff have a right to expect a safe and clean working environment;
• Where required, any safety gloves, goggles and protective clothing will be supplied to staff at no cost to them;
• Staff will be fully trained and equipped to perform their roles, including operating any machinery;
• Employees have the right to join a union, and may not be penalised for their decision to join or not join, consistent with local laws in that state or country.

Goal #12 Responsible Consumption & Production

We believe in making environmentally conscious decisions when sourcing both our raw materials and the vessels that house them.

We only use coloured-through glass for all products, as it’s 100% recyclable. We also encourage our customers to reuse LUMIRA glass candle jars as chic vessels around the home or office. All cardboard packaging is 100% recyclable and many of our paper products are made from recycled materials.

Our warehouse and head office in Sydney, Australia, is powered by solar energy and recycles all possible materials.

Goal #15 Life on Land

Alongside the blend of coconut and non-GMO soy wax used in our candles, the beautiful essential oils that give each candle and perfume oil its unique scent are all ethically sourced. Our suppliers have their own Responsible Sourcing Policies that set high standards for health and safety, environmental, business integrity and social practices.
